knock knock

Some days I really miss people.
We all grow up and out. I think there is still a place for each and every one of them - they just house less of their stuff in my home now. It’s sad sometimes. Other times it’s hopeful.

When we first all moved here to this big ole city anything would get us out.

These days we’re wrapped up in other intricate parts of our lives.
I just need to remember to walk over, and knock more often.

union

I married a very lovely man.

i married a very lovely man

He’s always taking the best care of me. Yesterday is just one of many examples but at one point he set up the lounge chair and a pillow outside for me so I could lay down and enjoy the breeze. He could just sense that I needed to unwind, and I’m notorious for not pushing myself to do this on my own. After a little nap, tea, and reading outside I was a new lady. I even made 7 jars of apple butter!

farm fresh egg

The other day I cracked an egg for a recipe.
In light of the recent salmonella outbreak and the ongoing unbelievable conditions of most chicken and hen houses, I am so happy we started buying all of our eggs locally from farmers this past spring. This egg came from the farm with a little extra something - chicken hair!!

hair hair hair!

I should begin by saying I have had long-ish hair until I was about 17.

1999/2000 - 17 years
Circa 2000 - Long dirty blonde hair (far left)

Then I started getting it cut in to some form of a bob when I went to college.

Soon after I moved to Chicago in 2006 I decided to start cutting my own hair. I had a great stylist in St. Louis, but was nervous to find one that I trusted as much in Chicago. So I grabbed the scissors and started an affair. I cut my own hair until the spring before my wedding in 2009 when I decided I should probably invest a little bit into even ends.

See, once I moved to Chicago my hair just started to do it’s own thing because of the humidity. So I then started curling it, too.
I had this hair cut for about two and a half years.

curly asymmetrical hair
Ignore the cigarette - It was my birthday.

And, now I’m at this weird point. I want to grow my hair out, but it is still asymmetrical. But this time by a lot! It’s kind of neat because if I cover up one side of my face I can see what I would actually look like again with longer hair, and vice versa. But I don’t know if I should just get it evened out right now, or if I should wait to let the right side grow out a little more.

I cut some bangs today, and straightened my hair for the first time in years so the difference between the sides is more obvious than my every day look.

Oh man decisions decisions. When I was younger (and only by a few years) I would just say do whatever to my hair because of course it always grows and I can always change the color. But now I’m just more apprehensive to make a decision about it. Oi vei.

What do you think I should do?

transition

The temperature has dropped. I always love the change of seasons. As much as I anticipate summer, blankets in the park, the beach, and bbqs there is nothing like the transition of summer into fall. It is by far one of my favorite times of the year. I think about digging through my box of scarves, and layering a favorite jacket over my shoulders for a walk - anywhere.

New Hampshire in the fall

Right now the wind is just right, and there is a quiet in the air. It makes me think back to our wedding. I remember through my research that New Hampshire would be about 55 to 60 degrees during October, and I waited forever trying to remember what that felt like. I wanted our guests to be comfortable, but I also wanted it to feel like fall - fire crackling and everything. Chicago’s AccuWeather says it is 59 degrees right now, so I guess it felt much like this.

I’ve been dreaming a lot about New England lately. I wish I was there for this time of year right now.

morning rituals

I swear I thought I wrote a post yesterday. Did I not?
Weird.
I had oatmeal with a little pat of butter and brown sugar this morning. Some days I lack all the motivation to put on clothes and makeup before work. I used to have it down like clockwork during the length of an hour 430 am to 530 am. Now I just do whatever I want for thirty minutes, and throw on a dress and a little powder in the other half hour.

And, I actually slept yesterday for nearly 11 hours yesterday/last night.
Whoa.

park time success!

We ended up spending a lot of time in the park this week…two different ones at that! Friday night we hopped on our bikes to Wicker Park and enjoyed take out on a blanket. You can’t go wrong with thai food, blankets, and park time. Ever.

week’s end

Indian summer has begun. This past week it has been 20 degrees cooler than it has all summer, and I welcome it with long sleeve cardigans! I’m not ready for summer to be over but I am ready to be comfortable and put in my romaine lettuce seeds! I should have done it last week, but of course didn’t get around to it. If they go in this week I think we should still get some lettuce before it gets too cold this fall.

I’m also planning on going to the park - any park. I want to lay on a blanket under a tree and listen to the wind. It might be hard to tune out the sirens and people but park time is always fun time. I feel like my weekend is shorter this weekend because I have plans. Why do plans make me feel as though I’m losing time? Aren’t I gaining an experience?

Anyways, have a wonderful Friday and weekend!

heirloom

I made a tomato and corn soup the other night with our few heirloom tomatoes we harvested this year. They are unbelievably sweet! Inside their fruit is yellow and red - very pretty. The soup turned out good, though corn doesn’t really blend very well so it’s a little thick in consistency.

We also had to pull up 1 of our summer squash plants and the zucchini plant - the roots were attacked. They were as good as dead. But we had a good summer!

dreaming of sheep

Every morning I wake up wishing it was light outside. Funny thing to wish for you think? Well, see if it is light outside that means I slept in. It also means the sun woke me up as opposed to the blaring beep of my trusty little alarm clock. Ever since I simplified the bedroom to two colors I pretty much want to hang out in this room all the time… cuddled under covers with the air conditioner blasting.
