On Monday Nathan and I took two boats in to Belize City, rented a car and drove out to Altun Ha via Old Northern Highway (which is basically a small winding rock road).
This was my first time visiting a Mayan ruin, and I was intrigued. I don’t remember much from my own history classes about the Mayans, but after visiting Altun Ha I desperately want to know more. How did they build these unbelievable cities? How did the society work? (If anyone knows of exceptional books or documentaries on Mayan history please let me know)!
It was also one of the hottest days that I have ever experienced. I mean, dripping with sweat. Jungle heat. And, beautiful butterflies hiding in the clover swarmed around me at one point. Lucky we were that no one else was there that day except for one tour group which was finishing up as we were just beginning our rounds. Breathtakingly quiet. Well, except for the toucan birds calling in the jungle.
I just loved it.
Oh, and then I met these four little boys who had caught alligators and armadillo.
